Junk science alert: researchers declare alternative therapies dangerous to children based on scant evidence











(NaturalNews) The headline emblazoned across a new British Medical Journal (BMJ) press release proclaims this alarming warning: Complementary medicines can be dangerous for children! But when you look at the proof that's supposedly been found documenting life-threatening dangers of complementary and alternative therapies, guess what? It simply isn't there.

Here are the facts: Australian researchers have just published their findings in the BMJ's Archives of Disease in Childhood showing complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is inherently dangerous for youngsters. Their supposed evidence consists of this: a few poorly documented reports of CAM side effects that were turned in to the Australian Pediatric Surveillance Unit between 2001 and 2003.

During these years, only 46 instances of adverse events (ranging from side effects like constipation, allergic reactions, mouth ulcers, and vomiting to seizures and four deaths) associated with alternative and complementary therapies were reported. And out of these, there were only 39 questionnaires about treatments and symptoms that were completed by parents and/or doctors.

The reports included children from birth up to the age of 16. About 64% of the supposed CAM reactions were rated as severe, life threatening or fatal. That sounds like a huge number until you remember that out of all the youngsters treated with CAM in Australia (who probably number in the tens of millions), only 39 problems were documented over the course of several years for this study. What's more, less than half (44%) of the children's doctors were willing to say they thought their patients had been harmed by a failure to use conventional treatment in favor of CAM therapies.

In over three quarters of cases (77%), the adverse events were considered to be probably or definitely related to CAM. However, the terms "related" and "associated" used in the study imply links but do not mean there was a direct cause and effect between CAM treatments and the symptoms and outcomes. Yet, the Australian research team manages to squeeze this conclusion out of their scant facts: complementary therapies "...can even prove fatal, if substituted for conventional medicine."

One of the most tragic cases reported that the Australian researchers tried to blame on CAM involved the death of a 10 month old child who developed septic shock (a potentially lethal drop in blood pressure due to widespread infection in the blood). The Australian researchers stated this happened "after being treated with homeopathy and a restricted diet for chronic eczema". While the baby no doubt needed appropriate medical care to fight the out-of-control infection, it is common sense that the initial illness was most likely due to bacteria entering the bloodstream through skin which was raw from eczema. Yet the way the research article is written gives the impression that CAM itself was the primary culprit in the death.

Moreover, there is no mention in the article that mainstream conventional drugs might actually have played a role in the baby's death. A 2009 study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology by the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood found that when antibiotics are used in the first year of life, they cause an increased risk of eczema. Had the baby ever been treated with prescription meds before his parents turned to CAM? Could earlier mainstream treatments have played a role in the eczema and later death instead of (or in addition to) any alternative treatments? Unfortunately, these kinds of details are not revealed in the anti-CAM study.

While no one wants children to suffer due to inappropriate treatments administered by parents, alternative health practitioners or doctors, clearly a sample of less than four dozen cases of youngsters experiencing side effects from complementary therapies over the course of a few years and a study that doesn't compare side effects and fatal outcome rates of prescription drugs and other mainstream medical treatments to more natural approaches should not be considered the definitive statement on the supposed life-threatening dangers of CAM.

Perhaps the most obvious flaw in the Australian study is that while it reports the four possible CAM related deaths as a dire example of deadly consequences of alternative and complementary medicine, it totally ignores the fact that conventional Big Pharma drugs directly cause the deaths of over 100,000 people of all ages each year in the U.S. alone. In fact, pharmaceutical therapies are causing problems of catastrophic proportions -- one person dies every five minutes from mainstream medical drugs, not from CAM (http://www.naturalnews.com/024052_d...).

And children are often the most vulnerable victims. Hundreds of deaths of youngsters diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) who were put on powerful stimulants such as Ritalin have been reported to the FDA MedWatch program, for example. In 2006, the FDA finally administered strong warnings for some of these drugs as horrendous real side effects (including serious psychotic problems, heart attacks, and fatal heart arrhythmias) became obvious.

Another case in point: over 300 people, including children, die in the U.S. from penicillin allergies each year. But there is no available data showing that 300 people are dying in the U.S. or Australia from CAM allergic reactions.

The new study also doesn't cite other Australian research presented by University of Sydney researchers at a conference of the International Pharmaceutical Federation earlier this year showing that children are being put at serious risk from the use of widely-available medicines for fever, coughs and colds. That study showed a far bigger problem with cough and cold medicines than with CAM therapies -- 48 per cent of calls in 2008 to the New South Wales Poisons Information Centre, which receives all out of hours calls from around Australia, concerned accidental overdose in children in from mainstream over-the-counter medicines, with 15 per cent of the kids so ill they had to be admitted to hospitals.

"CAM use has the potential to cause significant morbidity and fatal adverse outcomes," the authors of the latest study, from the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, concluded.

But the truth is, there's much more hard evidence that there are far more common and better documented dangers to kids than any CAM therapies. For example, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) warned earlier this year that every five days, a child in the U.S. chokes to death while eating hot dogs, candies and marshmallows; even more die after swallowing toys and balloons.

Chinese Medicine herbs scientifically proven to help halt cancer



(NaturalNews) A 1,800-year old Chinese herbal remedy for an upset stomach may boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy while reducing its side effects, according to a study conducted by researchers from Yale University and published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The treatment in question, known traditionally as Huang Qin Tang, consists of a combination of peony and skullcap flowers, licorice root and buckthorn fruit.

"It was used for the treatment of diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders for many years and is still used today," said lead researcher Yung-Chi Cheng. "We wanted to see if this herb could be used to limit the side effects associated with cancer chemotherapy, with an emphasis on gastrointestinal side effects."

Because chemotherapy drugs target healthy cells as well as cancerous ones, they can have severe and even debilitating or dangerous effects on the body. The digestive tract is particularly susceptible to these effects. To see if Huang Qin Tang could mitigate this problem, the researchers used an extract, based on the traditional formulation, called PHY-906.

"Chemotherapy causes great distress for millions of patients, but PHY-906 has multiple biologically active compounds which can act on multiple sources of discomfort," Cheng said.

The researchers induced colorectal cancer in mice, then treated the animals with chemotherapy. The drugs successfully shrank tumors, while causing major intestinal damage. Some of the mice were then treated with PHY-906.

In mice treated with the extract, damaged intestinal linings quickly healed. In addition, their tumors shrank more and they lost less weight than mice who had not been given the formula.

Cheng has founded a company to commercialize a formula for PHY-906.

Although Western doctors formerly ignored or scorned traditional medical practices, there is now a growing interest among Western researchers in uncovering new applications of traditional healing techniques, from herbalism to acupuncture to yoga. This shift is based in part on the realization that traditional medical practices have been healing people far longer than Western medicine has.

In a study of 300 breast cancer patients on anticoagulants, one eighth of them died from breast cancer, but not one developed metastases. Anticoagulants stop fibrin from forming. Fibrin (a natural substance needed for blood to clot) has a pretty significant role in the development of metastases: it coats maverick cells it finds in the blood stream, and thus protects them from the immune system, and it gives off a signal to start angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels (which a metastasis would need in order to root and grow).


Dr Sherwood Gorbach, MD, of Tufts University Medical Center conducted research showing that women who followed a low-fat, high-fiber diet decreased their risk of cancer by 16% to 24%. [Environmental Nutrition, August 1995]


Indoles from cruciferous veggies: it is assumed that they fight breast cancer by either converting the cancer promoting type of estrogen to a harmless form or by preventing an overproduction of estrogen. [Environmental Nutrition, August 1995.] However, more recent studies now show that they cause cell death in cancer (apoptosis) at a rate of 90% with no side effects, while Taxol caused apoptosis at a rate of 60% with many side effects.

The risk of developing breast cancer is greatest in young women who receive x-ray exposure during the ages of ten to 14. After the age of 14 the risk of cancer from x-ray exposure seems to drop until age 35 when it is thought to be minimal. [New England Journal of Medicine, 1989; 321: 19]

Normal production of melatonin in the pineal gland inhibits the production and overproduction of estrogen, however, many environmental factors inhibit the production of melatonin: electromagnetic fields, strong night lighting, alcohol, aging, medications (especially blood pressure medicines: beta-blockers and diuretics). James Sparandeo* points out that "dietary fat is of particular importance in hormone-dependent cancers like breast and prostate disease." He states that studies show that after five to six months on a low fat diet (20% of calories or less) showed significant reductions in total estrogen. A diet of just 29% fat calories to total calories significantly reduced the level of free estradiol, a hormone many researchers, feel is needed for the development of breast cancer. Finally, the hormone prolactin, shown to promote mammary cancers in lab animals and to increase growth of human breast cancer cells in the lab, can also be reduced significantly by reducing fat intake.

Diet, The Key to Prevention!

Reduce your dietary fat intake to no more than 20% of total calories. The optimum goal is 10%.
Base your diet on rice, potatoes, corn, beans, whole grains and pasta.


Eat lots of fresh organic vegetables and fruit. Stress the cancer-fighting foods - the protease inhibitors: fermented soy products (see warning below), chick-peas, lentils, limas, and red, black and white beans; the cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower; and the beta-carotenes including carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, and squash.

An amazing testamony

I was suffering with incredible back pain for about 10 weeks and couldn't even load the dishwasher without pain. My doctor had reached the point of basically saying, I could get shots every month or surgery, or live off of ibuprofen. I came home so depressed and desperate and called out to God for healing or to direct me in some way of why these things always happen to me. It was then that I came across Dr. Sarno's Mind-Body work and this video.

After watching that video, I got Sarno's book "Healing Back Pain" within hours. Within 30 minutes of reading the book, I was in tears because it was explaining my entire life since childhood. My brain was trying to "do me a favor" and direct my emotional pain from past abuse to different parts of my body - which medical records, hospitalizations from the past 23 years prove. I missed a lot of school growing up and even had rare illness' in my early 20's and went from doctor to doctor.

As I was reading his book, I realized what was happening in my body. I couldn't deal with the emotional pain of abuse and thus, my brain did only what it could to help me - put the pain somewhere else in my body.

Only after 3 hours of reading the book, my back pain completely disappeared! I told my brain to stop it and then told it that it had to deal with things and stop using my body as the means to divert me from the pain of my past. It cooperated and for the past 11 weeks I've been illness free!!! I don't remember a time in my life that I have gone so long being free of sickness or some injury, etc.

God is helping me and I'm finally dealing with these things........its been quite a hard road but without Jesus, I'm not sure where I would have been!! I had no idea that I never dealt with things, I just subconsciously pushed them back in my brain and never DEALT with emotions. It has been very hard to deal with things in my mind now, but its keeping my body pain and illness free! I know so many people who have been abused or went through things and they are suffering with pain that pills and even surgery won't help - and only if they would realize what their brain is doing, they could have deliverance.

I'm writing a letter to Dr. Sarno to tell him what his book did for me and my life story as well but I wanted to let you all know what a life change I have went through the past 11 weeks and even close friends have told me that I'm like a different person. Thank you God for this man and the wisdom you gave him and remember the Bible itself tells us:

Home remedies for a cough


My daughter and I are just getting over a pretty stubborn cough. Unfortunately it did not go away within the time frame that I was expecting but I learned a lot within the last two weeks. Here are some of the remedies that I had tried. All combined were very effective.

Onion Syrup:

Preparation

  1. Cut a medium purple onion in half and then slice in 1/4" pieces.
  2. Break into parts and layer one part onion and one part raw cane sugar or raw honey in the glass jar.
  3. Mash the onion up with the end of a spoon to begin juice extraction
  4. Let the preparation sit over-night or for 3 to 4 hours until a syrup is formed.

Dosage

Give your child one teaspoon of syrup (half onion juice and half sugar) every few hours or as needed for relief of frequent coughing.

Carrot poultice:
Carrot poultices can be used to treat sore throats, colds, the flu, tonsillitis, bronchitis, swollen glands, or any time cleansing of the lymph is needed. You can use them as often as necessary. You will need some carrots and a grater to get started. This recipe was originally from Dr. John Bastyr...Application:
Use this poultice to treat swollen glands, sore throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, cold or flu, laryngitis, or fever. Its use is to cleanse and purify. It is a good aid for any cough or cold that settles in the glands of the neck. During a cold or flu, stimulating the flow of lymph is helpful.

Ingredients:
Gather two large fresh carrots, one sheet of cheesecloth or paper towel or muslin and a 2-inch piece of fresh ginger (optional). You will need a grater, blender of food processor.

Procedure:
Grate carrots finely-- food processor is good for this or use a hand grater. Collect the grated carrots, juice and all, and place them in the center of the cloth or paper towel. Wrap the paper in thirds, and then fold in the edges to seal and secure the bundle. This can be a little messy but you will get better with practice. The finished size is four inches wide by eight inches long.

Wrap cloth around your neck and lie down. Place an old towel or cloth around it to prevent staining bed sheets. The cloth will become hot, drawing heat from your neck. Rest for at least a half an hour or longer, as you wish. Discard the carrots when done. This can be repeated as often as necessary. You can reuse the poultice for 12-24 hours if you refrigerate between uses.

Castor Oil Packs:

How it works

A Castor oil pack is placed on the skin to increase circulation and to promote elimination and healing of the tissues and organs underneath the skin. It is used to stimulate the liver, relieve pain, increase lymphatic circulation, reduce inflammation, and improve digestion.

How it is made

Castor oil packs are made by soaking a piece of flannel in castor oil and placing it on the skin. The flannel is covered with a sheet of plastic, and then a hot water bottle is placed over the plastic to heat the pack.

A Castor oil pack can be placed on the following body regions:

  • The right side of the abdomen to stimulate the liver.
  • Castor oil packs are often recommended as part of a liver detoxifying program.
  • Inflamed and swollen joints, bursitis, and muscle strains.
  • The abdomen to relieve constipation and other digestive disorders.
  • The lower abdomen in cases of menstrual irregularities and uterine and ovarian cysts.

Safety precautions

Castor oil should not be taken internally. It should not be applied to broken skin, or used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or during menstrual flow.

Castor Oil Compress Materials

  • Three layers of undyed wool or cotton flannel large enough to cover the affected area
  • Castor oil
  • Plastic wrap cut 1-2" larger than the flannel.
  • Hot water bottle
  • Container with lid
  • Old clothes and sheets. Castor oil will stain clothing and bedding.

Castor Oil Compress Method

1. Place the flannel in the container. Soak it in Castor oil so that it is saturated, but not dripping.

2. Place the compress over the affected body part.

3. Cover with plastic.

4. Place the hot water bottle or heating pad over the pack. Leave it on for 30-90 minutes. Rest while the pack is in place.

5. After removing the pack, cleanse the area with a diluted solution of water and baking soda.

6. Store the pack in the covered container in the refrigerator. Each pack may be reused up to 25-30 times.

Frequency of use

It is generally recommended that a Castor oil pack be used for 3 to 7 days in a week to treat a health condition or for detoxification.

Along with doing all of the above we were both taking vitamin C, drinking lots of tea, taking 1 clove of crushed garlic with water or juice, and taking about half tsp of manuka honey. That is not including the supplement we take on a daily bases and my homemade chicken soup. The recipe is below.

Ingredients:

Chicken broth or water

1-2 lbs of Chicken (cubed)

1/2 cup quinoa

2 sticks of celery (chopped)

1 large carrot (chopped)

1 package frozen mixed veggies

1/4 or 1/2 medium onion

3 cloves fresh garlic

2 cubes fresh sofrito (look up recipe online) Great Stuff!

1-2 tsp Himalayan Crystal Salt

Pinch of ground black pepper or Cayenne

1/4 tsp of Turmeric powder


Instructions:


You will want to use a large pot. Fill it about half way with either the chicken broth or water and add the cubed chicken and the quinoa. When the chicken and quinoa are almost done add your frozen bag of mixed veggies, let them cook for just a few minutes and then add the rest of your ingredients, adding your spices last. Let it cook for about 10 minutes on medium heat. You really do not want to over cook your veggies so that you will not lose the nutrients.


It usually takes about 30-45 minutes to cook and serves about 10 people. Enjoy!

How to Fight Candida Yeast Infections Naturally

Natural Cures and Remedies for Oral Thrush


Oral thrush is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates in the mouth. Ultimately thrush can spread to the gums, the back of the throat, the tonsils and even down the esophagus. Oral thrush occurs most often in babies and toddlers, or in older people with compromised immune systems.


Symptoms of Oral Thrush

Take 1/2 tablespoon to one whole tablespoon of organic extra virgin coconut oil and let it melt in your mouth. Then swish the oil around in your mouth for at least five minutes and up to 20 minutes. Tea Tree Oil -- Mix four drops of tea tree oil into a half a glass of warm water. Swish it around in your mouth for at least a minute, longer if you can. Make sure you reach every part of your mouth. Do not swallow but spit out solution when finished.

Keratosis Pilaris



Keratosis pilaris (ker-uh-TO-sis pil-AIR-is) is a common skin condition that causes rough patches and small, acne-like bumps, usually on the arms, thighs and buttocks. Keratosis pilaris bumps are usually white, sometimes red, and generally don't hurt or itch. Keratosis pilaris can be frustrating because it's difficult to treat. Prescription medications and self-care measures can improve the appearance of your skin.

Though you may not like the sandpaper-like appearance of your skin, keratosis pilaris isn't serious and doesn't have long-term health implications. In fact, though some cases may persist, keratosis pilaris usually disappears by age 30.


I recently discovered that I have Keratosis Pilaris on my arms, back, chest, and thighs. One Natropathic doctor that I had seen a couple of years ago said that it was an omega 3 deficiency and another Natropathic doctor that I am seeing mentioned the possibility of it being a Vitamin A deficiency.

I am taking both Vitamin A and Omega 3s and still have not noticed a significant difference, unless I am not taking a high enough dose. Hmmm...

I have tried some home remedies that are working and would like to share it with anyone who may be trying to get rid or reduce the the appearance of KP.

Here is a list of the ingredients along with my regimen.

ACV

Water

Mix equal parts ACV and water in a spray bottle and leave in the shower

You can use this liberally to restore your body's natural pH balance. It also is a great deodorant and hair conditioner.

Food for your skin:

Nutiva Certified Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil ( GREAT STUFF) I have tried quite a few brands and this one by far is the most superior and tastes GREAT!!!

Body scrub ingredients:

Olive Oil

Himalayan Crystal Salt

Organic cane sugar

In a small container mix all the ingredients together. I used about 1/4 cup olive oil with about 2 tbsp of Himalayan Crystal Salt and organic cane sugar. Leave it in the shower. Make a small amount so that the oil does not become rancid.

My Concoction:


Olive Oil- 1 ounce

Sea Buckthorn-1 ounce

Jojoba Oil

Vitamin E oil-1 capsule

Primrose Oil-1 capsule

Mix all the oils into a small two ounce brown bottle and apply it 2-4 times a day.

My regimen:

In the shower gently exfoliate your problematic areas with the body scrub in a circular motion being sure not to rub vigorously so as not to irritate your KP. Then spray the ACV/water mix directly onto your skin and apply a liberal amount of coconut oil and massage the area.

If you choose to use my oil concoction great, but if not I believe the ACV and Coconut oil will work fine. It is just a little something that I wanted to try and it is working wonderfully. I apply this mix 2 to 4 times a day and it has only been 1 full day since I have done this and I already notice a significant improvement.


For all of you silver bullet fans out there, I hate to bust your bubble but there is no silver bullet. Doing one thing will not do. It is a combination of things and a good place to start is your diet. Properly hydrating your body and eating right is important. Eat as much fresh vegetables and fruits as possible, preferable organic. Eat grass fed meat whenever possible and avoid fast food like the plague. I know sometimes we bend, I am even guilty of it. Many people eat out all the time and wonder why they cannot see past their navel. Moderation is key. I understand not everyone can afford to eat organic but start small, remember baby steps. We did not get this way over night and it will take some time to turn things around.

Think Before You Pink!

The whole point of this awareness month is not actually to increase awareness of breast cancer - virtually everyone is already aware of the existence of the disease - but rather to increase fear so that more women will go get screened for cancer. They should really call it the "Be Afraid of Breast Cancer Month."

The big push for more cancer screening, it turns out, only results in more recruitment of women into high-profit cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and surgery. This is where the real profits are to be found, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month is really all about corralling women into these high-profit treatments. The science, however, says that radiation, chemotherapy and surgery harm far more women than they help, and that cancer over-diagnosis and over-treatment is such a huge problem today that all these breast cancer awareness campaigns are actually hurting women's health across the board.
So why doesn't the cancer industry rally women to prevent breast cancer every October? The answer is obvious: Preventing breast cancer would reduce the number of cancer patients being processed through their high-profit cancer centers. If women were to effectively prevent cancer by avoiding toxic chemicals, eating anti-cancer foods and boosting their intake of anti-cancer nutrients like vitamin D, cancer rates across America would plummet -- perhaps by as much as 80%.

But what's the real kicker in all this: We don't need any new research to prevent breast cancer. We already know how to prevent it right now! It's easy with vitamin D, exercise, fitness, superfoods and anti-cancer nutritional supplements such as medicinal mushrooms. Yet virtually the entire cancer industry actively ignores all these things. Just go to a "Walk for the Cure" cancer rally sometime and ask the officials there why they don't promote preventing breast cancer. Their answers will amaze you. They simply have no interest in preventing breast cancer. Their entire focus is treating breast cancer, which is a clever ploy for recruiting women into extremely toxic conventional cancer therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Let's face it: Cancer is growing into a trillion-dollar industry worldwide. There's a ton of money to be made from keeping women nutritionally ignorant, scaring them into cancer screening, irradiating their breasts with mammograms, and then charging them huge dollars to "treat" their cancers.

Do Not Kill a Fever: Fever Kills Viruses


A Blast From the Past - Feed a Cold; Starve a Fever

Remember that one? Well there is truth in it. Lena Sanchez, a retired RN medical office administrator, now holistic healer and author of Antibiotic Alternatives to Preventing Mega Bacteria, confirms this from her 30 years of experience. Her experience was that most patients, especially mothers of young patients, would panic over fevers and insist something be done to lower the temperature.

Doctors often foolishly succumbed to their pleas. Lena Sanchez's stance is that fever is part of the immune system's clean up from bacteria waste products or an attempt to halt viral replication. Either way, fever needs to be there and not minimized by drugs. It is extremely rare that a fever will exceed 106 degrees Fahrenheit or 41 degrees Celsius.

But while it may be okay for a person with a common cold and very little (under 101 F or 38 C) or no fever to eat or be fed, a solid fever does need to be starved, especially if viral influenza is being experienced. The liver is the clearing house for both digestion and detox. Lena Sanchez recommends fasting on very light broths and purified water to assist an overburdened liver during the fever process of getting rid of the body's microbe waste materials. She also recommends enemas, which could shorten the fast.

She has seen pneumonia patients who were encouraged to eat more get worse and even die. She claims this only serves to push the disease one's fever is fighting deeper. And of course, she has seen several who followed her suggestion of starving the fever get thoroughly well quicker.

Another Blast from the Past - Sweat It Out

It was quite common for many to observe that by not trying to cool off, and by actually bundling up more and allowing the body heat to induce even sweating, that the next day the fever broke or reduced significantly. But even with that, the notion was to break the fever. What was really happening was that by encouraging the fever to completely take over, the fever did its job and was no longer needed!

An American practitioner of Chinese Medicine, Karen S. Vaughan, advises, "Initial levels of both Wind heat and Wind cold [Chinese Medicine terms describing underlying situations that induce fever] are treated by inducing sweating. You would take a warm bath, cover yourself with quilts and go to bed drinking the teas.

"If the disease is not treated at this level or is treated inappropriately then it will penetrate to more internal levels and you will need strong antimicrobial herbs that drain the pathogens through the bowels and the urine."

Often a fever is accompanied by chills, even to the point of shivering. That makes it easy to bundle up and sweat! But sometimes that is not the case. Then it takes a willful effort to follow the bundle up and sweat protocol. So never mind breaking the fever with or without medication as the goal. Let the fever help you heal.

All the sources cited for this article tend to agree. It's the condition of the patient that matters more than the fever. Someone who is very ill without fever (under 101 F or 38 C) should cause more concern than someone running a high fever but resting well while taking in fluids and eating little.
