Exercise Helps Your Immune System Protect Against Future Cancers

If you are like most people, when you think of reducing your risk of cancer, exercise probably isn't at the top of your list. However, there is compelling evidence that exercise can not only help slash your risk of cancer, but can also help cancer patients get well sooner, and help prevent cancer recurrence.
Research has also shown it may help minimize the side effects of conventional cancer treatment.
A preliminary study presented at The Integrative Biology of Exercise VI meeting in mid-October1 helps shed light on why exercise is so effective for decreasing the risk of secondary cancers in survivors, or why it can decrease your risk of getting cancer in the first place.

Exercise Improves Your Immune System's "Cancer Surveillance"

Sixteen cancer survivors who had just completed chemotherapy participated in the three-month long study. The fitness program, which was tailored to each individual, included:
  • Strength training
  • Endurance training
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Exercises for flexibility, balance and posture
The researchers examined the immune cells in the participants' blood before and after completion of the 12-week program, and the analysis showed that a large portion of the T cells were altered into a more effective disease-fighting form, called "naïve" T cells. As reported by Medical News Today:2
"[Lead researcher] Bilek explained, 'What we're suggesting is that with exercise, you might be getting rid of T cells that aren't helpful and making room for T cells that might be helpful.'
This research is important because it not only emphasizes the advantages of exercise for cancer patients and cancer survivors, but it also demonstrates how it can benefit healthy individuals. However, the increased 'cancer surveillance,' or the power of the immune system to stop emerging cancers, is particularly beneficial for those struggling with cancer, or who have just survived it.
Bilek concluded: 'There's a litany of positive benefits from exercise. If exercise indeed strengthens the immune system and potentially improves cancer surveillance, it's one more thing we should educate patients about as a reason they should schedule regular activity throughout their day and make it a priority in their lives.'"

Viewing Exercise as a Drug

Besides altering your immune cells into a more potent disease-fighting form and improving circulation of those immune cells in your blood, another primary way exercise lowers your risk for cancer is by reducing elevated insulin levels. This creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. It's also been suggested that apoptosis (programmed cell death) is triggered by exercise, causing cancer cells to die.
The trick though, is understanding how to use exercise as a precise tool. I like to suggest viewing it as a "drug" that needs to be carefully prescribed to achieve its maximum benefit. This ensures you're getting enough to achieve the benefit, not too much to cause injury, and the right variety to balance your entire physical structure and maintain strength, flexibility, and aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels.
Ideally, doctors would prescribe exercise in specific "doses" and intervals. To do this properly, oncologists would be wise to develop relationships with personal trainers, and prescribe training sessions for their patients. If you have cancer, I would highly recommend discussing exercise with your oncologist, and/or work with a trained fitness professional who can help you devise a safe and effective regimen.
Unfortunately, many public health guidelines still focus only on the aerobic aspects of exercise, and this exclusive focus can lead to imbalances that may actually prevent optimal health.
It's important to include a large variety of techniques in your exercise routine, such as strength training, aerobics, core-building activities, and stretching. Most important of all, however, is to make sure you include high-intensity, burst-type exercise, once or twice a week, in which you raise your heart rate up to your anaerobic threshold for 20 to 30 seconds, and then you recover for 90 seconds. These exercises can increase your body's natural production of human growth hormone.

Compelling Evidence in Support of Exercise as Cancer Prophylactic

In the 1980s the notion that exercise may help prevent cancer started getting its due attention. According to a study published 12 years ago in the British Medical Journal,3 which explored the relationship between exercise and cancer, exercise affects several biological functions that may directly influence your cancer risk. These effects include changes in:
Cardiovascular capacity Energy balance
Pulmonary capacity Immune function
Bowel motility Antioxidant defense
Hormone levels DNA repair

In 2003, a paper in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise4 reported that "more than a hundred epidemiologic studies on the role of physical activity and cancer prevention have been published." The authors noted that:
"The data are clear in showing that physically active men and women have about a 30-40 percent reduction in the risk of developing colon cancer, compared with inactive persons … With regard to breast cancer, there is reasonably clear evidence that physically active women have about a 20-30 percent reduction in risk, compared with inactive women. It also appears that 30-60 min·d-1 of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity is needed to decrease the risk of breast cancer, and that there is likely a dose-response relation."

Cancer Groups Recommend Making Exercise Part of Standard Care

In recent years, a number of cancer groups have started taking exercise seriously. For example, a recent report issued by the British organization Macmillan Cancer Support5 argues that exercise really should be part of standard cancer care. It recommends that all patients getting cancer treatment should be told to engage in moderate-intensity exercise for two and a half hours every week, stating that the advice to rest and take it easy after treatment is an outdated view.
The organization offers loads of helpful information about the benefits of exercise for cancer patients on their website, and also has a number of videos on the subject, available on their YouTube channel.6
Professor Robert Thomas discusses the benefits of physical activity during after cancer treatment.
According to Ciaran Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support:7
"Cancer patients would be shocked if they knew just how much of a benefit physical activity could have on their recovery and long term health, in some cases reducing their chances of having to go through the grueling ordeal of treatment all over again..."
Indeed, the reduction in risk for recurrence is quite impressive. Previous research has shown that breast and colon cancer patients who exercise regularly have half the recurrence rate than non-exercisers.8 Macmillan Cancer Support also notes that exercise can help you to mitigate some of the common side effects of conventional cancer treatment, including:
Reduce fatigue and improve your energy levels Manage stress, anxiety, low mood or depression Improve bone health
Improve heart health (some chemotherapy drugs and radiotherapy can cause heart problems later in life) Build muscle strength, relieve pain and improve range of movement Maintain a healthy weight
Sleep better Improve your appetite Prevent constipation

Exercise Tips for Cancer Patients

I would strongly recommend you read up on my Peak Fitness program, which includes high-intensity exercises that can reduce your exercise time while actually improving your benefits.
Now, if you have cancer or any other chronic disease, you will of course need to tailor your exercise routine to your individual circumstances, taking into account your fitness level and current health. Often, you will be able to take part in a regular exercise program -- one that involves a variety of exercises like strength training, core-building, stretching, aerobic and anaerobic -- with very little changes necessary. However, at times you may find you need to exercise at a lower intensity, or for shorter durations.
Always listen to your body and if you feel you need a break, take time to rest.
Just remember that exercising for just a few minutes a day is better than not exercising at all, and you'll likely find that your stamina increases and you're able to complete more challenging workouts with each passing day. In the event you are suffering from a very weakened immune system, you may want to exercise at home instead of visiting a public gym. But remember that exercise will ultimately help to boost your immune system, so it's very important to continue with your program, even if you suffer from chronic illness or cancer.
That said, if your body will not allow you to exercise, either due to pain or worsening of your underlying condition, then you have no practical option but to honor your body's signals and exercise less. Even though your body desperately needs the exercise to improve, you will only get worse if you violate your current limitations.

Protein Intake Also Crucial for Cancers

I recently interviewed Dr. Ron Rosedale for nearly fifteen hours and i hope to be able to start posting those articles very soon. He is one of the first physicians in the U.S. that started measuring leptin levels clinically and was far ahead of the curve on this one. In our interview, he helped me understand the major importance that excessive protein intake can have on cancer growth.
The mTOR pathway is short for mammalian target of rapamycin. This pathway is ancient but relatively recently appreciated and has only been known for less than 20 years. Odds are very high your doctor was never taught this is medical school and isn't even aware of it. Many new cancer drugs are actually being targeted to use this pathway. Drugs using this pathway have also been given to animals to radically extend their lifespan. But you don't have to use drugs to get this pathway to work for you.
You can biohack your body and merely restrict your protein intake and replace the decreased protein with healthy fats as this will provide virtually identical benefits as these dangerous and expensive drugs.
Eating excessive protein can be an additional synergistically powerful mechanism. Dr. Rosedale believes that when you consume protein in levels higher than one gram of protein per kilogram of LEAN body mass you can activate the mTOR pathway, which will radically increase your risk of cancers. It is very easy to consume excess protein and my guess is that most people reading this are. I know I was, and as a result of this new insight I have reduced my protein intake by about half.
To determine your lean body mass find out your percent body fat and subtract from 100. So if you are 20% body fat you would have 80% lean body mass. Just multiply that times your current weight to get lean body mass. For most people this means restricting protein intake from 35 to 75 grams. Pregnant women and those working out extensively need about 25% more protein though.
Of course when you reduce protein you need to replace it with other calories, so the key is to replace the lost calories with high-quality fats such as avocados, butter, coconut oil, olives, olive oil, nuts and eggs. It is also very helpful to avoid eating anything for three hours before going to bed as this allows you to have relatively low blood sugars while you are sleeping. This is another good trick to move your body to fat burning mode.
Nearly everyone is primarily in carb burning mode because of the amount of carbohydrate content that they consume. The beauty of shifting over to fat burning mode is that it virtually eliminates hunger. Intermittent fasting is one way to help achieve this, but radically cutting back on non-vegetable carbs is also very important. Coconut oil is particularly useful to use in making the transition to fat burning mode as it is primarily short and medium chain fats which break down very quickly and can be used as an energy source which is important for countering the decreased energy and other physical challenges that many encounter in the several weeks it typically takes to make the transition to fat burning mode .

Why It Hurts-Part 1

In the headlines we hear things such as:

-Chronic pain is responsible for more than $150 billion spent on healthcare- and disability-related costs. - U.S. Census Bureau 1996

-Addressing chronic pain, a hard-to-treat yet highly common condition, costs the United States as much as $635 billion. - Reuters March 2012

-Lost productive time because of common pain conditions alone among workers costs an estimated $61.2 billion per year. - Excerpt from JAMA in 2003.

All of this is for the most part astounding but for those of us who are suffering it is like so what. The thing that has the greatest impression upon our minds is, why does it hurt?

Let me add another question to that one for you, why do babies cry?
I know that it sounds a little crazy to ask such a thing but I want you to think of an answer in just a single word. Once you have your answer go ahead and write it down or just keep a mental note of it for now. I'm sure by now that you already have your answer. Let's consider the reason that a baby or infant cries is to alert the parent to address a need that it has and desires to be met. The greater the need that child has, the greater the cry or longer it will cry. This is not rocket science here folks and neither is it meant to be. What you need to realize is that our body is no different than that crying baby. The problem is thanks to its wiring the method your body will use to communicate with you the most is pain.

Pain is your body's way of informing you that there is a need that must be addressed or a situation that requires your utmost attention. Pain is part of a natural electro-chemical process and in most cases it is stimulated by a disruption within or without of the body. The manifestation of this disruption may be an actual injury or even a perceived injury. Also the manifestation could be in the form of a sickness, or emotion which could lead to a set of characteristic behavior that further complicates the original disruption. For now we will just focus on an injury. The greater the injury or the longer it goes without being addressed the greater or longer the pain lasts or recurs.

Even if you looked at the more technical explanation of why pain hurts and look into the receptor terminals on the skin and organs that our nerves are attached to and just focused on the noceceptive chain of events that come from noxious stimuli or even take into account the psychological stimulators and the overall underlying impact on the body, isn't this still communication? Our entire nervous system is nothing more than a very complex communications network designed to effectively do one main thing, which is get your attention and pain once again is one way in which God designed our bodies to carry out that communication.


You see it doesn't really do much good to the person suffering to have a nice list of big words and explanations that usually are hard to understand just to get the simple gist that hey your body is trying to tell you something. In the grand scheme of things there must be a paradigm shift from practitioner as the expert to patient as the expert. Let me let all of you out there suffering from pain in on a little known secret, you are the expert on your condition.

Why and how is this so? Simple, you are in your body all day not, your physician or practitioner. Once you really get this straight, things can begin to change for you permanently. I know you were expecting something more technical and hard to understand that would likely take a degree but that is why the headlines read the way they do right now. It is time for you to realize that hey my body is not against me but is really trying to let me know what that next step is and no one else can tell you. Help is a good thing but the right kind of help is a great thing. People today don't need more prescriptions but need to be provided with the right:

-Tools
-Guidance
-Encouragement

These are the formula for real relief and possible reversal of whatever condition they deal with. The Caloric Conundrum Part I

In the realm of nutrition and health there is a lot of focus on counting the infamous calorie. This is really a hoot when it comes to shedding a few or more pounds for short or long term duration. I would like you to raise your hand if you have ever seen a calorie. No need to be shy since no one but yourself will see you unless you are not alone reading this. Anyhow it is not likely that you would unless of course you are getting a little ahead of me. What I mean by that is the impact of the calories you are consuming that can be agonizingly visible when they settle down on you in the wrong places.

It may seem strange that a thing which has no physical existence can make you fat. Especially in the consideration that a square inch has no flavor and neither has a calorie. You can't touch a calorie any more than you can put your finger on a heat wave. It is as invisible as a fever. So then what in the world is it in the first place you may ask? That is simple enough; it's a measuring unit of energy in terms of heat. Just consider it to be a thermal yardstick applied to the exchanges of energy in your body and to the foods that provide such energy.

In a furnace, coal gives off heat which could be measured in calories but is usually calculated according to a different yardstick called British Thermal Units. In you, food gives off heat measured in calories, one calorie being the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a pint of water 4 degrees Fahrenheit. Coal, if mixed with slate, does not give off very much heat. Some foods contain much water, inert fiber, and other nonburnable elements so that they do not yield much heat either.
Therefore the fact of the matter here is that you cannot judge, from the mere physical bulk of a meal, how much energy value it contains. It is possible to eat small-size meals and grow in-gloriously fat on them. That sounds like an oxymoron doesn't it? While that may be so it is a matter of fact. The opposite is also possible, which is to eat meals of huge bulk and grow thin as a rail. The differences are matters of calories. But hold on to that thought folks.

Newsflash, while all calories are similar the impact that they have on your body are quite different. That is so considering that there are three different kinds. First I tell you small meals can make you fat and large one can make you then and now this. This guy is off his rocker, right. Well just stay with me a little more, especially since we will be wrapping up this first piece in our series on calories.
Now consider this although any calorie represents the same amount of heat, it can be furnished by three very different types of food elements: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. And oh, the difference to you! Mere calorie-counting is futile when it really comes down to getting your weight properly in check. Why? That's because, one kind of calorie is far more efficient as a weight-reducer than the other two kinds.

Natural Birth


There is nothing like giving birth in the comfort of your own home and being surrounded by people that you  love and trust.

I am  pregnant with my fifth child and my little Sophi is due to arrive any day now. I will be having another in-home water birth which I am excited about. This is my second water birth. My last delivery was at home in a birthing pool and it was by far my best birthing experience and the quickest. I have had two other natural births and one hospital birth.

My first child was born in a hospital. I had an Epidural, which did not work, and Demerol. The Epidural wore off and when the anesthesiologist administered it she did it wrong and thought she paralyzed me. It was horrible and thankfully I was not paralyzed. The Demerol made me hallucinate which was awful. My room turned into a circus. You'd think I'd be laughing but it wasn't funny. I was bed bound in the infamous lithotomy (lying on my back) position. Not only was it uncomfortable but my pain increased and labor seemed to come to a halt. The lithotomy position is the most unnatural position to be in and is advantageous only to the doctor.

Thankfully my labor was only 12 hours but had I known then what I know now I believe that my experience would have gone a lot smoother and faster. I was clueless when it came to birth and had no idea what was going on with my body. I kept going to the restroom because I thought I had to defecate when in fact it was the baby. After making my third round to the toilet and nothing passed my pastors wife said Hun, I think it's the baby. I remember being placed back on the bed and pushing for what seemed like an eternity. I also  remember feeling my doctor cut me which was unnecessary. I would have rather torn than have gotten an episiotomy.  Some may prefer to get snipped but I did not want that. I delivered a healthy 6 lbs 12 ounces baby girl who was taken and ran though a mill so it seemed before they handed her over to me.

Shortly after being transported to my room I started to develop intense headaches due to the Epidural. I even lost my hearing for a few seconds. Although it was only a few seconds it was very scary. My husband was talking to me and his voice started to fade and then I could not hear him. I started to freak out. Thankfully it was only for a few seconds. I wish I could say that about the spinal headaches I developed. The headaches lasted six days and those were the worst six days of my life. I told my husband I'd rather die then have to live like that. I was bed bound and when I did make the attempt to get up I felt like my head was going to explode. Literally. There was so much pressure from the center of the back of my head down to my neck that it felt like it was going to blow up. Giving birth was more tolerable.

For the next six days the doctors visited me daily. I was constantly being poked with needles and had an I.V. struck in my arm. I felt like a guinea pig, like an experiment. Six days felt like an eternity, especially with spinal headaches. Around day five I had what is called a blood patch done which I unfortunately cannot explain. Most of it is vague considering that I was drugged. I believe they gave me morphine but I am not 100% sure. What ever they gave me left me in this deep sedated state. I could not open my eyes but I could hear. When I was transported back to my room I heard my husband praying. It really was encouraging considering everything that was going on with me and what I had just gone through. I remember him laying  hands on my head and praying and I kid you not I could almost hear the sound of angels or what sounded like a choir of angles. I cannot really describe the sound itself but I never heard anything like it prior to it or since that day. I know it may sound surreal to some but it was very real to me. I am not sure how long it was but after he prayed it was the first time that I could get up and walk without intense pain in my head. I could not move very fast and my balance was a bit off but I was standing and we were praising God in that hospital room. I don't remember if I was discharged that day or the next day but I was able to go home and be with my family.

After such a traumatic experience I did not want another hospital experience and I definitely did not want drugs. A friend told me about her experience with a midwife and helped me get in contact with her. I had met up with her shortly afterwards and that was the beginning of my natural birthing journey. I say journey because here am I with baby number five and this will be my fourth in-home birth. I will have to post on my experiences at a later date. In the mean time I strongly encourage those who are considering on having a baby or who are already expecting to educate yourselves. Get to know you, your body, and your baby. Having a good doctor or midwife is a must. Do your research and do not settle for the first person you meet. You want someone you can trust and that will allow you to be in control and not try to dictate what you do or who will make you feel as if your body is incapable of doing what God has designed it to do. You don't need a whole lot of medical intervention, in fact next to none if you are healthy and if the baby is healthy. You don't need drugs. Birthing naturally gives you control. Too often doctors intervene because of their schedule or protocol and make birthing mothers feel incapable of delivering their baby. All there medical interventions only delay the process. It really is not necessary. Each labor is unique and takes time but there are reasons for this and God only knows why each one is so.

I have learned a lot over the past 9 years and have found the more I know the smoother and more pleasant my birthing experience is. It is always encouraging to read other birth stories especially those done at home or in water.Remember you have a choice. You can be in control. There is so much information out there.
